ST. PETERSBURG, FL (WWSB) – Florida Highway Patrol says the driver of a vehicle that fell more than 50 feet off Interstate 275 was distracted by the car radio.

First responders were on the scene of a single-vehicle crash at 5th Avenue North and 20th Street North in St. Petersburg just after 11 a.m. Thursday after a 2016 Chevy Camaro drove off the Interstate.

According to troopers, Thomas Highhouse, 61, was traveling southbound on I-275 when he looked down to adjust his car stereo. Distracted, Highhouse failed to maintain control of his car and veered off the roadway into the median.

Highhouse continued in the center median, becoming airborne down a bridge embankment and landing in the center of 5th Avenue North, a drop of more than 50 feet troopers say.

FHP reports that Highhouse did not suffer any injuries, but, was cited for careless driving.
